Engine cuts out when temperature below 10C

Good day,

My car starts OK on a cold morning - below 10C - but when I put gear into drive the engine cuts out. I have to leave the engine running for a minimum of five minutes before it goes OK. Has anyone had this problem? I had a local garage look at it but they had no idea what the cause was.

1.6 ltr. January 2012. Have had the car for 3 1/2 years and had no problems. This problem started this autumn.
Full service in January 2018. Just had a small service last week.

I'm guessing it's an automatic, does it cut out or does the load of going into gear pull the revs too low?

What are the idle revs?
Does revving it slightly as you put it into drive stop it?

Yes, it's an automatic. The engine cuts out completely.
While idle just over a 1,000 revs
No, it still cuts out, revving doesn't help
