Radio LED Fading

Post by kaz » Thu Oct 25, 2018 7:39 pm

Sorry for duplicating this topic, I have mentioned it in introduction section but since I haven't received any answers thought I would try in this section, where I should of entered it in the first place I guess.

The LED in my radio fades to the point you can't see it after about 10/15 mins, if you leave the car switched off for an hour or so it comes back with brightness being normal, however if you try it sooner than an hour its likely to rename dim. This fault does not affect the audio side of the radio only the display.

A friend of mine who has had some experience with auto electrics says it might be a dry joint which affects the display when the unit gets warm. I have tried to locate a company who might be willing to repair the fault, however to date can't find nobody to take it on.

I am starting to think maybe I will need to replace the radio which poses another question. The Nissan replacement seems to be extremely expensive which made me think of an aftermarket brand/model. Can anybody recommend an aftermarket model which will be compatible in so much it will show all the other information the factory radio shows.

Thanks for any information that will help me.

Kaz.

Can you post a pic of it, never had an issue with ours, though it is a satnav version.

Hi Kaz, Are the led lights fading when you have the engine running or is it all the time, as for anyone fixing car radio's I am afraid I have never heard of any,Do you know if there are any car breakers in your area to see if they have any Jukes in that you can buy off them.
Its only a Juke if it's RED.

Hi Bernie, when you turn on the car and start the engine from cold the LED display is fine after driving for about 15 mins give or take it starts to fade and it stays like that. If you park up and leave it for about an hour its fine again for about 15 mins or so then fades again.

Yes perhaps a breakers, ebay or similar is the answer I suppose.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

What does it look like when lit up, is it backlit? or like a proper lcd screen?

Things like this are annoying, it could be a dry solder joint as has been suggested or the failure of some small component costing a few pence, unfortunately it would be the cost in time to identify that component and quite likely a whole circuit board would have to be replaced.
As suggested a breakers yard might be your best bet, failing that consider ebay as that might give you some idea of units that could replace the original radio

Thanks Duncan, think I'm coming to that conclusion myself unfortunately. On that point is there anybody on here please that has replaced their radio with an aftermarket model, if so would really be interested and grateful for any recommendations of a brand / model they have found satisfactory. Thank you.

Hi Vexorg not sure how to answer your question, sorry for being so thick! When it is working the letters and symbols are green and visible.

One other thing down the left hand edge as your looking at the radio from top to bottom there are a number of symbol's one is the Bluetooth symbol, cant remember the others but these DON'T fade when the information regarding the radio station you are listening to DO FADE.
